Allergy FAQs

When it comes to allergies, you may experience them seasonally or have certain reactions to different foods or medications. You could live with allergies on a daily basis or you might not be completely sure what an allergy is or why your body reacts to certain substances negatively. Additionally, when you experience an allergic reaction, the first thing you do may be to reach for a bottle of medication that contains painkillers and antihistamines. While this may initially help with your symptoms, it cannot take your allergies away long term and may only mask the more serious problem that you are facing. If this is the case, you should speak with an allergy specialist, like an allergist in Manassas, VA from Black & Kletz Allergy, as soon as possible to get you on the right track before you experience an allergic reaction or before your seasonal allergies hit. For more information, contact our office today.

What are allergies?

When we think of allergies, we typically think that it is our body’s way of reacting to bad substances. When this happens, we get itchy eyes or runny noses. But, what determines what we have an allergy to and why does our body react so poorly? When you have allergies, your immune system begins reacting to a substance that is normally not considered to be dangerous to a person. This could be pet dander, foods, or pollen, among other things. However, your body reacts to these external agents when your immune system begins to attack these foreign invaders. In attempting to destroy what they think is damaging (eating a peanut), it triggers an allergic reaction.

What are common allergies?

There are many common allergies. Some of these include:

Skin Allergies. This may come in the form of eczema (known as atopic dermatitis). It is a reaction in your skin that can cause severe itching, rashes, scabbing, and flaking. Another form of skin allergy is hives, which are raised, itchy, red bumps that often appear on your skin in clusters.

Food Allergies. Many people also suffer from food allergies, and some of the most common food allergies that people experience are from nuts, eggs, wheat, fish, and dairy. Food allergies can cause a range of symptoms, including hives, skin reactions, as well as anaphylactic shock. Other less severe symptoms from food allergies come in the form of nausea, bloating, and diarrhea.

Medication Allergies. When you experience an allergy to a medication, typically the best way to deal with it is through avoidance or through allergy shots that help you build up a tolerance to the medication. Common symptoms are skin reactions as well as anaphylactic shock.

What happens when you go into anaphylactic shock?

Anaphylactic shock is incredibly dangerous and it is the most severe reaction that a person can have when it comes to allergic reactions. This reaction causes parts of your body to swell, and when your throat begins swelling it can cause difficulty breathing that leads to suffocation. Additionally, you may experience a drop in blood pressure as well as vomiting.

If you have allergies and would like help with your diagnosis or treatment, please reach out to an allergy specialist now for more information.

For those who have this condition and wish to pursue natural and non-surgical treatment options, chiropractic care may offer the optimum solution. Chiropractic treatments can lessen their pain and improve their range of motion. We encourage you to call us today to schedule an exam.

The Nervous System

The nervous system transmits information between the brain and the nerve endings located throughout the body. The nervous system can be adversely affected by spinal misalignment, and that in turn can cause pain and other symptoms for persons who are already suffering with fibromyalgia. Spinal misalignment can result in unnatural pressure on the nerves, and this is common when one or more of the spine’s vertebrae have locked into the wrong place or are restricted in mobility due to injury. Very often, pain and great discomfort results. A chiropractor can perform a spinal adjustment to realign the vertebrae so that they can function correctly. The adjustments are made by the chiropractor by using specialized motions to stretch the back or by using a gentle pressure. In some instances, the chiropractor uses a safe, high velocity thrust to realign the vertebrae. Once the spine is aligned properly, it can relieve pain due to nerve compression. Additionally, patients who suffer from fibromyalgia may also experience an increase in energy and an improved quality of sleep.

Some patients who suffer from fibromyalgia may benefit from a combination of treatment that includes chiropractic care as well as acupuncture, psychotherapy massage, spa therapy, exercise, and changes in their diet.

Chiropractic Treatments

Patients who have fibromyalgia experience regular bouts of severe pain. Most do not experience additional pain from chiropractic treatments, nor are the adjustments normally a trigger for painful episodes. However, should there be an exception from the norm, our chiropractor can make changes to your treatment regimen as needed, including using different techniques to perform the adjustments.

Cautions

Chiropractic adjustments are a safe, proven, and effective treatment method that has been around since the 1890s. For some patients, a chiropractor may recommend that spinal manipulation may not be an optimum choice for those who suffer from spinal cord compression, lupus, osteoporosis, or rheumatoid arthritis. If you are suffering from certain types of cancer, this caution may also apply. During your exam, be sure to discuss your existing conditions with the chiropractor so that they have the information needed to provide you with the highest level of care.

Call for an Exam

To find out more about the benefits of chiropractic treatment for those who suffer from fibromyalgia, contact us to schedule an exam. Our chiropractor can perform an exam and provide you with more information—call us today.

If you have lost a good amount of hair from your head, a hair transplant can help you regain your locks and make you feel better about your appearance. During the procedure, a surgeon moves hair from another part of your body to fill an area with little to no hair. The entire process typically take between 4 and 8 hours to complete. If you’re getting this procedure soon, it’s important to know how to take care of yourself afterward. How well you take of yourself can have an impact on your final results.

Here are some tips for recovering from a hair transplant.

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

It’s a good idea to sleep with your head elevated for at least a week after your hair transplant surgery. Otherwise, you may experience more swelling. If you have a reclining chair, you can try sleeping in that for the first week. If you don’t to do that, be sure to prop up at least three pillows behind your head in your bed.

Don’t Expose Your Scalp to the Sun

After you get a hair transplant procedure, it’s very important to protect your scalp from the sun. Your scalp will be very tender after the surgery and won’t be able to protect itself from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The sun can also damage the underlying tissues and hair follicles that haven’t healed in your scalp, potentially jeopardizing your final results. That’s why it’s always important to wear a hat when you head outside.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

For the first week after your hair transplant surgery, you should avoid any strenuous activities that will get your heart rate up. This may include running, lifting weights and bike riding. If you engage in strenuous activities too soon, you run the risk of dislodging your hair follicles. Try to take it easy and rest as much as possible.

Wait 48 Hours Before Washing Your Hair

It’s important to wait at least 48 hours after the hair transplant procedure to wash your hair. Then, you can begin washing your hair with gentle shampoo and warm water for the next two weeks.

Keep Your Hands Off Your Scalp

After you get a hair transplant surgery, it’s tempting to touch your scalp. However, you should avoid doing this. If you touch your scalp, you can irritate it and even increase the risk of infection.

Don’t Drink Alcoholic Beverages

Drinking a glass of champagne or wine to celebrate your new hair might not seem like a bad idea. However, drinking alcohol too soon can reduce the blood supply to your head and slow down the recovery process. Try not to drink any alcoholic beverages for at least a week after your surgery.

If you follow these tips, you should be able to recover from your hair transplant just fine. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor.

Can Naturopathic Care Complement Traditional Medicine?

When people begin seeking new health care options and start to explore naturopathic options they often ask the same question: Can I seek natural care and standard care at the same time? People often think they will have to choose between naturopathic care or traditional Western medicine, and only use one or the other. The truth is, you don’t need to choose! Yes, you can absolutely seek natural care and standard care at the same time. In fact, many people do.

Several naturopathic doctors work in partnership with traditional medical doctors. It is a commonly held belief that naturopathic doctors can often complement traditional medical care. Traditional medical doctors are trained to treat specific issues or symptoms, while naturopathic doctors have been trained to look for the underlying causes of a patient’s symptoms. Naturopaths also look at patients in a holistic sense, and care for the totality of their patients. While a medical doctor or surgeon can provide immediate care and relief, a naturopath’s goal is to help their patients achieve lifelong health and wellness and eliminate the symptoms altogether by getting rid of its root cause.

Chronic Headaches

A medical doctor can prescribe countless medications to ease the pain of recurring headaches, and they will take care of the problem. This is important because people have to be able to continue to function in their daily lives. However, the headaches will most likely not go away. A naturopath, on the other hand, will investigate why the headaches keep occurring and prescribe alternative treatments in an effort to eradicate them altogether. This is an ideal situation because the patient gets immediate relief, but is also working towards permanently resolving the issue.

Cancer Treatment

Natural care can improve the results of standard care and it can often help to reduce the side effects of certain treatments. Cancer treatment is a good example. Traditional medicine can offer life-saving treatments such as radiation, or chemotherapy. However, the side effects of these treatments can include nausea, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Many cancer patients work with a naturopath to help manage those negative side effects and help build a healthier core foundation while treatment is in progress.

Diabetes

Diabetes is another good example. Most Type 2 diabetics have to take insulin to help manage their blood sugar levels, which is prescribed by a traditional medical doctor. However, a naturopath might encourage patients to work with a nutritionist to reduce the amount of sugar they ingest.

You can complement your traditional medical care by scheduling an appointment with a naturopath, acupuncturist, chiropractor, osteopath, or homeopath at Coastal Natural Health.

Naturopaths and Prescription Medications

If you’re trying to decide if you want a naturopath as a primary care provider you may be slightly nervous. You may be asking such questions as, can I still be referred to a specialist? What happens if I need surgery? Can naturopathic doctors prescribe prescription drugs? As much as you may want to rely on naturopathic health care, you may still want the option of having prescription medications available to you as needed. If this is the case, there’s good news for you.

Licensed naturopathic doctors receive a comprehensive curriculum in pharmaceutical drugs in medical school. And depending on which state they practice in, most naturopathic doctors should be able to prescribe prescription medications.

However, you should be aware that it’s probably unlikely that they’ll prescribe any pharmaceutical medications without exhausting any and all other options. More than likely they will first try a number of different natural treatments and remedies to help fix an underlying cause before they prescribe a medication. And even then, they may only write a prescription if doing so will contribute to a patient’s overall general health and wellness. However, if they feel it might be beneficial, most should be able to write a prescription.

Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain is a good example of when naturopathic doctors may be willing to prescribe prescription medication. Some of the standard naturopathic treatments for back pain include:

  • Chiropractic visits
  • Acupuncture sessions
  • Massage Therapy
  • Physical Therapy

These alternative treatments won’t work, however, if someone is in too much pain to take advantage of them. In this case, a naturopath might prescribe medication for pain relief so that therapy is bearable.

Migraines

Anyone who’s experienced a migraine can tell you it can be impossible to function when they hit. There are several prescription medications that will get rid of the immediate pain and discomfort, and a naturopath might use those as a temporary solution while they figure out the underlying cause. Sitting through an acupuncture session while experiencing a migraine might be impossible for some people, but they might get relief from medication long enough to reap the ongoing benefits of acupuncture.

Allergies

There are several prescription medications that can help with severe allergies. A naturopath may choose to utilize these while they make alternative recommendations to lessen your body’s reaction to certain things such as pollen or dander.

There are a number of alternative medications and also prescription medication options at Coastal Natural Health. Call today to set up an appointment and explore your options.

Remove Toxins From Your Life

The number of people who wish to lead a toxic-free life is steadily increasing, and as a result, it’s becoming increasingly easier to do so. And it’s no wonder why, studies show that toxins have a negative effect on the entire body. From headaches and vertigo to poor memory and erratic behavior, toxins are having a harmful impact on humans. Unfortunately, toxic chemicals are everywhere, so you might be asking yourself: How do I live a toxic free life? Fortunately, there are several ways you can remove toxins from your life.

Buy Organic Produce

As the old adage goes, “You are what you eat.” Non-organic foods may contain pesticides and/or antibiotics. Eating food that contains toxins means that those toxins go directly into your body. Pesticides are used prominently in standard grocery store produce. Buying only organic produce will help steer you towards your goal of living a toxic-free life.

Use Natural Cleaners

The majority of standard cleaners use harsh chemicals and cleaning agents, which are just simply not necessary to clean your house. While they are not as prevalent as mainstream cleaners, these days there are more options than ever that allow you to buy non-toxic options. Or, perhaps better yet, you can make your own cleaners out of common household items such as white vinegar and baking soda.

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: Add one part white vinegar, one part water, lemon rind, and some springs of Rosemary. Pour into a spray bottle and shake before use.
  • Glass cleaner: 2 cups water, ½ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol. If you’d like, you can also add a couple of drops of an essential oil if you’d like a scented cleaner.
  • Kitchen Cleaner: Mix 1 quart warm water with 4 tablespoons baking soda to create a scrub for all your kitchen appliances.

Only Use Natural Bath and Body Products

If you’re striving to live a toxic-free life, then you’ll most certainly want to take a look at the things you’re putting on your body on a daily basis. Personal care products and cosmetics contain a large amount of chemicals. Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, shaving cream, and lotions are typically filled with preservatives, thickeners, and artificial colors. Non-natural products use toxic chemicals to achieve optimal product result, and these are the products that you’re putting directly on your body. A good portion of these products are made to soak into skin, so you want to be extra cautious with those.

Visit a Naturopath or Homeopath

Instead of seeing a traditional medical doctor, try making an appointment with a naturopath or homeopath who use natural products and medications to treat ailments. You can make an appointment at Coastal Natural Health to learn more.

The Difference Between Holistic and Homeopathic Approaches to Health

It can be confusing to seek information on alternative practices to conventional healthcare. Often, it can feel like there are so many branches of medical treatment with endless webpages of information touting one health practice over another. If you have spent even a little time on the internet, it is likely that you have come across styles of holistic medicine and homeopathy. Keep reading if you would like to learn the difference between homeopathic and holistic treatments.

What is Holistic Medicine?

Simply put, holistic medical care involves a practitioner evaluating and treating the entirety of a patient’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual systems. Symptoms of disease or ailments are considered to be an imbalance in the systems. This approach towards the “whole person,” rather than an isolated symptom, is intended to encourage the person to naturally heal while developing a positive mindset. Most holistic treatment plans come with personalized recommendations regarding the improvement of diet, exercise, mental health, and lifestyle.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is related to holistic medicine, but has more of an emphasis on the usage of natural remedies for chronic and acute illnesses. Homeopathic practitioners will often recommend a variety of remedies for the symptoms of their patients. These remedies are regulated by the FDA and most will be cruelty-free and eco-friendly. Homeopathic remedies are often considered to have fewer side effects and be more gentle than conventional medications.

How Should You Choose Between Holistic and Homeopathic Approaches?

As with any medical decision, research is a good way to find the best plan for your health needs. Due to everyone’s unique needs, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare. Booking appointments with holistic and homeopathic practitioners can help answer your questions. Since the two fields are related, you may even find that a combination of holistic and homeopathic treatments is right for you.

Both branches of holistic medicine and homeopathy aim to treat the wide range of ailments and disorders that a patient can experience. The type of healthcare you choose ought to help make you feel better, both physically and mentally. These fields of healthcare are endorsed by their followers for making them feel more personally supported, especially when contrasted against the more clinical atmosphere of conventional Western medical practice. Whether you find the right treatment through the assistance of a holistic practitioner or with homeopathic remedies is up to you. If you are interested in learning more about homeopathy and holistic treatments, contact a local professional for further information.

The Many Benefits of Holistic Medicine

Holistic, in medical terms, means to treat a person as a whole instead of treating a single symptom or body part. This means that holistic practitioners take everything that impacts a person into account when they’re practicing medicine, they believe that the body is a single system and all body parts work together. So, rather than simply treating the body, like modern medicine does, holistic health looks at the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. While practitioners do look into mental and physical symptoms, they also look into things such as physical movement, social activity, and spirituality. People often ask, “Why is holistic medicine better?”, and the whole-body approach has several benefits.

Focuses on Preventing Illnesses

While Western medicine treats disease, holistic medicine focuses on trying to prevent it altogether. Holistic medicine focuses on helping people maintain a high level of health in general so they don’t have to worry about treating diseases. Many practitioners say that the key to their treatment is balance and believe that keeping the body in balance will help maintain optimal levels of health. Some of the different types of holistic treatment include acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy, herbal medicine and/or supplements, massage, and yoga.

Looks at Underlying Causes

The majority of doctors who practice Western Medicine treat symptoms, and they haven’t been taught to look deeper and investigate into a patient’s underlying causes. Because holistic doctors look at their patients as a whole, they will ask questions and try to find out what’s causing certain symptoms instead of treating them. It’s easy to take a pill to get rid of a headache, for example, but if a person experiences recurring headaches holistic doctors will try to find out what’s causing them in the first place and help eliminate that original root cause.

Long-term Health Benefits

Because holistic medicine looks at how to keep the whole person as healthy as possible, practitioners don’t concentrate on short-term solutions. Holistic medicine looks at the overall quality of health for a person’s lifetime. If, for example, a patient is experiencing back pain a holistic doctor won’t prescribe pain medicine, they might recommend daily stretches and chiropractic adjustments to improve overall posture. Having improved posture can have lifetime benefits, whereas a medication will simply take away pain on a temporary basis.

Fewer Side Effects

Almost everyone is familiar with the notoriously long lists of potential side effects from prescription medications. Natural medications can have side effects as well, but there are far fewer of them and they are not nearly as significant.

Chiropractor

Whether you’ve never been to a chiropractor and are considering it, or have been a dozen times and are heading back for more, you may wonder if all patients are adjusted the same way. Perhaps you’ve seen the doctor work on other patients before and it looked similar to your adjustments. Maybe you’ve spoken with other chiropractic patients and they’ve told you about their experiences, which sound an awful lot like yours. While things may appear to be the same, every patient requires a different set of adjustments for the most accurate care.

Unique Situations

One patient might walk into the chiropractic office complaining of lower back pain. Upon further questioning and examination, the doctor might realize some adjustments in the neck could be the solution. A second patient could walk in moments later, complaining of lower back pain, to discover the hip needs an adjustment. Though some patients might seem to have the same complaint, their situations are unique and a chiropractor takes the time to figure out why they’re feeling the way they are and what the best adjustment will be for their unique situation.

Factors at Play

Something else to keep in mind is there are a variety of factors at play when chiropractors take a look at a handful of patients. For example, an elderly patient might not benefit from an adjustment an adolescent could benefit from, even if their cause of discomfort were the same. Chiropractors take age into consideration when deciding on adjustments, as well as other factors such as size, weight and your overall condition of physical and mental health.

The Doctor Is the Professional

If you’ve been talking to your friends and they’ve recommended a certain adjustment, remind yourself the chiropractor is the professional. Your friends and family members might have good intentions, but you should see a doctor before trying any adjustments on your own, or before allowing other untrained individuals to adjust your body. What works for one person might not be right for you, and your chiropractor will only complete an adjustment they feel will benefit you the most.

Contacting Your Chiropractor

To learn more about chiropractic adjustments and what you can do to relieve any ongoing pain you’re experiencing, get in touch with a chiropractor. Your course of adjustments will build upon the first, so let your doctor consider your unique situation and other factors that will determine the best course of action to follow. Contact your chiropractor today to get started.
